Photographic Centre Peri and Turku Museum Centre / the Museum of History and the Future project declare an open call for proposals for a temporary public artwork. The open call is related to the Kohtaa kaupunki, kohtaa turkulainen project (‘Meet the city, meet the resident’) to be carried out in 2023 and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johan Jakob Reinberg (1823– 1896).

Johan Jakob Reinberg was a versatile artist. He was not only a photographer and lithographer but also as a painter and taxidermist, in addition to which he toured the country with his cosmorama shows. Reinberg's photos of Turku are some of the most iconic historical views of our city. He was also a distinguished portrait photographer who took the pictures of numerous Turku residents in the city's first photographic studio. In summer 2023, you may come across Reingberg's historical images of the city and studio photographs in the urban space of Turku city centre. During the anniversary year, Turku Museum Centre will publish a comprehensive book of articles on the artist and his work as well as organise an open lecture series in cooperation with Turku City Library and Turku University of Applied Sciences' Degree Programme in Fine Arts.

As part of Reinberg's anniversary year, Photographic Centre Peri and Turku Museum Centre/the Museum of History and the Future project will organise an open call for proposals for artworks addressed to professional artists, artist groups and art students. Such techniques as photography, video or light art may be used in the work of art, which will be on public display for a limited period. The work of art must be based on, comment on or otherwise draw on Reinberg's works or their themes.

You can familiarise yourself with Reinberg's production:

Artist's fee and other compensations

The fee reserved for the artist who creates the work selected in the call is EUR 10,000, which will cover all work needed to produce the work and put it on display: design, implementation and materials of the work as well as participation in any meetings, production of communication materials, planning the arrangements for transporting the work, and installing and taking down the work. A maximum of EUR 5,500 of the artist's fee may be reserved for material and production costs, while the remainder is allocated to the artist's fee or salary. Subject to agreement with the selected artist, the artist's fee can be paid either against an invoice or as a salary in an employment relationship. In addition, the artist will be paid Kuvasto copyright compensation, or a similar amount if not a member of Kuvasto, for the public display of their work.

Any installation costs incurred from putting the work on display will be covered from a separate project budget (including a possible multimedia projector, fees of the staff hanging the work, applications for permissions, etc.). The proposal for the artwork must include an estimate of the cost and workload associated with putting it on display. The artist will be responsible for insuring the work at their discretion.

The artist will remain the owner of the work throughout the process. Turku Museum Centre will have the right to document the work and add the documentation material to its collections, and to use and display the documentation material subject to a separate agreement with the artist. The copyright of the proposal remains with the artist.

What we are looking for

We will select a work of art that will be put on public display for a limited time, in which such techniques as photography, video or light art can be used. The work will be on display in the urban space of Turku. Possible locations may include:

  • parks and squares owned by the city

  • surroundings of WAM

  • along Läntinen Rantakatu

When submitting their proposal, the artist must propose one or more possible locations for the work. If the proposed location is not on land owned by the city, the artist must ask the owner of the relevant land area or property for initial permission to install the work there before submitting their proposal.

The work will be published on the 200th anniversary of Reinberg’s birth on 28 July 2023, and the exact end date of its display will be agreed upon with the selected artist.

Selection of the artwork

The work will be selected by a panel consisting of:

  • Ville-Matti Rautjoki, Senior Curator, Turku Museum Centre

  • Julia Chir, Project Manager, Development of the city centre spearhead project, City of Turku

  • Principal Lecturer Ismo Luukkonen, Degree Programme in Fine Arts, Turku University of Applied Sciences

The selection criteria will be the artistic quality of the proposal, its association with Reinberg’s work, the feasibility of the proposed work in proportion to the available resources, and the placement of the work in urban space.
