Film screening: I AM A DARKROOM

Film screening: I AM A DARKROOM

Friday, 8 December 2023 18.00–19.30

Photographic Centre Peri (1st floor)
 Vanha Suurtori 5, Turku

Free entrance!

The Saari Residence and Photographic Centre Peri invite you to a preview screening of the documentary I AM A DARKROOM, created by artist Edd Carr, followed by a discussion between Edd Carr and philosopher Elisa Aaltola.

I AM A DARKROOM showcases the work of artists in the Sustainable Darkroom, a grassroots organisation at the forefront of creating an ecological future for photography. From kitchen tables, to at home darkrooms, and even the dirt outdoors - these artists are challenging toxic legacies to build a new ecology of photography. An ecology not just of sustainable materials, but the political and social entanglements that arise each time you press the shutter.

Following the screening, Carr and Aalolta will share motivations and questions about their practice and discuss new possible ways of understanding and telling an animal within the context of the arts and research. This discussion stems from Carr’s artistic work and Aaltola’s research project Voiko? (eng. Can?). The discussion hopes to explore the question of how we can take into account the individuality and rights of non-human animals in contemporary art and society, considering its material processes.
